Humanitarian Relief to Iraq

Global Container Lines is proud to have been selected by USAID for the carriage of the first shipment of humanitarian relief cargo to the people of Iraq. The Motor Vessel "Free Atlas" sailed Galveston, Texas on April 04, 2003 with a cargo of 28,000 mtons of wheat bound for Iraq. The vessel arrived in Aqaba, Jordan on April 30  where the cargo was discharged for onward delivery to Iraq.

New York based Global Container Lines Limited ("GCL") is a worldwide leader in marine transportation and logistics. While providing a global service, GCL's core areas of operation are the Middle East, Africa, and the Indian-Subcontinent - areas in which GCL has a long history. GCL has extensive experience in the multi-modal carriage of humanitarian relief cargo under difficult circumstances and in regions with little or no logistical infrastructure. In November 2001, GCL was selected by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for carriage of the first relief shipment of humanitarian aid for the people of Afghanistan.
